Brother Daniel Piasecki, OFM
Br. Daniel Piasecki, OFM, a Franciscan friar of the Sacred Heart Province, died on January 14, 2021, at the age of 82, at Holy Family Memorial Hospital in Manitowoc, WI. He was born on January 7, 1939, in South Bend, IN, to Benedict and Clara (Przybylski) Piasecki. He has one younger brother, Johnny. Baptized at St. Adalbert Church, in South Bend, IN, Daniel completed his gradeschool education at St. Adalbert and St. Stanislaus Schools.
Following school, Dan enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent four years stationed at Okinawa, followed by four more years of service, stationed in Texas, in the Air Force. In both branches, he was part of the Military Police.
After leaving service, and several different jobs, at the age of 38, Dan discerned a vocation to Franciscan life and was received into the novitiate on June 25, 1977. He made his simple profession on August 11, 1978, and his solemn profession on October 10, 1981.
During the next 30 years, he served his Franciscan community, and the church, as a sacristan at St. Peter’s Church in Chicago, IL, in the Book Bindery at Quincy College in Quincy, IL, in AIDS Ministry in St. Louis, MO, Quincy, IL, and Springfield, IL, and in fraternal service to the senior friars in Springfield, IL. He retired in 2011, first at St. Clare’s Villa in Alton, IL, and then, in 2016, at Blessed Giles Friary in the Felician Village in Manitowoc, WI. With declining health, he moved to nursing care at Manitowoc Health and Rehab in February of 2020.
Br. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Benedict and Clara Piasecki, other relatives, and numerous Franciscan brothers and friends. He is survived by his Franciscan brothers of the Sacred Heart Province, his younger brother, Johnny, 18 first cousins, his god-child, Juan Morales, and special friend, Br. Thomas Rock, CSC, a Holy Cross brother.
The friars would like to express their appreciation to Br. Dan’s caregivers: those at Blessed Giles Friary, at Manitowoc Health and Rehab, and at Holy Family Memorial Hospital.
There will be a private Mass of Resurrection on Wednesday, January 20, 2021. Following the Mass, Br. Dan will be buried in the friars’ plot at Calvary Cemetery in Manitowoc, WI.
