Obituary for Carl A Umlandt

Carl A  Umlandt
Carl A. Umlandt, age 100, a resident at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc died on Friday morning, January 15, 2016 at Shady Lane.

He was born on August 4, 1915 in Park Rapids, Minnesota, son of the late Robert and Mary (Marohn) Umlandt. The family moved to Winneconne in 1926. Carl was a graduate of Winneconne High School with the class of 1933. On August 15, 1942 he married the former Marion Frederickson in Oshkosh. She preceded him in death on July 22, 1990. Carl was employed from 1934 until 1938 at the Uptown Garage in Winneconne as an auto mechanic. He worked from 1938 until 1941 with the Kimberly family of Neenah as a maintenance man for their fleet of sailboats and iceboats. During this time he also managed a duck hunting lodge on Lake Winnebago. In 1941 Carl started his employment with Manitowoc Shipbuilding in the Submarine Construction Program. There he was manager of a planning department that scheduled the assembly of all the machinery to be installed in the hull of the sub. Carl was able to be on the USS Robalo for a day long test run on Lake Michigan with the US Navy test crew.
In 1944 Carl attended a school at the Naval Gun Factory in Washington DC to study the manufacture and installation of rocket launchers mounted on the deck of submarines. As the war ended the US navy cancelled the contract with Manitowoc Shipbuilding and none were installed on the submarines.
Following the end of WWII Carl moved on to Manitowoc Engineering as planning manager for the crane division. He retired in 1981 as Operation Manager of crane division after 40 years of employment.
Carl enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially on the Wolf River. He also took several trips to Canada. He was an avid bridge player and a dedicated Green Bay Packer fan. Carl was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church having served several terms the Church Council and as a past president of the congregation. Carl held membership in Redeemer’s Men’s Club, Kiwanis Golden K, YMCA, Maritime Museum, Capitol Civic Center, Manitowoc Senior Center and AARP.
Survivors include a niece and her husband: Carolyn and Stephen Williams, Concord, NC, and a nephew and his wife: Jim and Jean Schuenke, Oshkosh; a special Godchild: Karen Carpenter, Middleton. Other relatives and close friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Marion Umlandt; one brother: Fred Umlandt; one sister: Bertha Schultz; two sisters-in-law: Evelyn Umlandt and Janice Schuenke; two brothers-in-law: Adolph Schultz and Jack Schuenke; and three nieces: Jean Pfaff, Barbara (Dennis) Pegel and Joyce Baier.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00PM (noon) on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. Officiating at the service will be Rev. Zachary DeArmond. Burial will be at Winneconne Cemetery, Winneconne.

The family will greet relatives and friends at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc on Monday, January 18, 2016 from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM. The visitation will continue on Tuesday morning, January 19, 2016 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Manitowoc from 11:00 AM until 11:45 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Redeemer Lutheran Church Mission Fund.
