Life Story for James R Ziegelbauer

James R. Ziegelbauer, age 91, peacefully ended his long battle with illness at his home on June 8, 2018 with family at his side.
Jim, the son of the late George and Diana (Asselin) Ziegelbauer, was born on May 13, 1927 in Iron Mountain, Michigan. The Ziegelbauer family moved to the Lakeshore Area, settling first in Two Rivers, moving to Manitowoc thereafter. Jim attended St. Luke’s Parish school in Two Rivers through the third grade. Jim also attended Holy Innocents Parish grade school and Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School before graduating from Lincoln High School. He then attended St. Norbert College before graduating from the University of Wisconsin.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of nearly 68 years, Irene (Binversie) Ziegelbauer. Survivors also include five children: Robert Ziegelbauer, Manitowoc, WI; James Jr. (Donna) Ziegelbauer, Atlanta, GA; Donna (Philip) Platteter, Manitowoc, WI; John (Kim) Ziegelbauer, Vienna, VA; and Paul Ziegelbauer, Libertyville, IL; eight grandchildren: Katherine and James III Ziegelbauer; Anne, Laura, and Julia Platteter; Adrienne and Midshipman (NROTC) Matthew Ziegelbauer; and John P. Ziegelbauer; two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law: Robert (Kathy) Binversie; Virginia Brennan; Stanley (Kay) Binversie; Janet Seichter; Fay Binversie; as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his daughter: Mary J. Ziegelbauer; his parents: George and Diana (Asselin) Ziegelbauer; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Henry and Elizabeth Binversie; two brothers and one sister: George, Francis, and Margaret Ziegelbauer; five brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law: Herman and Florence Binversie; Dolores and Lester Klingeisen; Leona (Binversie) Ziegelbauer; Janet Binversie; Gordon Seichter; Roman Binversie; and Eugene Binversie.
Jim served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1945 until 1946, initially at the Great Lakes Naval Station, and then at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard. After graduating from college, Jim operated a Budweiser beer distributorship from 1950 until 1957, and a Hamm’s beer distributorship from 1957 until 1972. He also owned and operated The Timber Lodge, The Red Bird, The Varsity Club, and with the help of his wife Irene, the North Shore Warehouse from 1972 until 2008.
Jim was active for many years as a member of the St. Andrew’s, Holy Innocents and St. Francis of Assisi Parish Councils, where he served a variety of roles including Treasurer and President. Jim was also the Chairman of the St. Andrew’s parish Roncalli High School Building Fund in 1964 and subsequently was involved for a number of years on the Roncalli School Board as Finance Chair and as President.
Jim was a longtime member of the Elks Club, the Eagles Club, and the Knights of Columbus.
The family suggests that any memorial contribution be made in Jim’s name to Roncalli High School’s Mary Ziegelbauer Scholarship fund for students attending either St. Norbert College or Marquette University.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Homecare Health Services and Hospice for their compassionate care.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13th, 2018 at St. Francis of Assisi, Waldo site (1121 North 14th Street). Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen. Burial will take place following the service at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Manitowoc.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday, June 12th, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc where a Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. lead by Rev. Richard Klingeisen. The visitation will continue on Wednesday morning, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi, Waldo site.
